In Chattisgarh where the Congress won decisively there are three contenders in the fray: Tamradhwaj Sahu, Bhupesh Bhagel and T.S. Singhdeo.
A final decision on the candidate is expected, in all probability after settling the candidates of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. A top level meeting at Congress President’s residence attended by Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, A.K. Antony, Jyotiraditya Scindia and K.C. Venugopal.
Sahu, who is likely to be the chief minister, belongs to OBC and Sahu community which has a sizeable presence in Chattisgarh. He is close to 10 Janpath. He has a clean image and maintains a low key. He has been a member of the CWC for some time.
Bhupesh Bhagel is another OBC leader and belongs to a family of farmers. He is credited to have good organizational skills. However he is said to be autocratic and does not carry all factions of the party together.
The third in the race is suave and intellectual T.S. Singhdeo, who is close to 10 Janpath. He is a non controversial leader but is not considered aggressive enough. He mingles with party workers freely.
At the moment the general impression is that Tamradwaj Sahu is likely to be chosen for the top post in Chattisgarh.
