ECI prevents candidates from carrying over Rs 50,000 cash

Raipur, Oct 8: With the election process setting into motion and the Model Code of Conduct coming into force, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has barred candidates and their agents from carrying more than Rs 50,000 in cash in assembly segments concerned.

Chhattisgarh Chief Electoral Officer Subrata Sahu said that all candidates are required to open a separate bank account for election-related expenditure, which is not permissible through existing or earlier bank accounts.

He said that candidates need to open a bank account at least a day prior to filing nomination, and submit related details during the filing of nomination.

Sahu said that a candidate could open either a single account in his own name, or a joint account in his and his agent's name. However, a joint account along with a family member is not allowed unless he is his election agent as well. UNI
