Agency News

Kolkata, Jul 17 : In its bid to conserve energy, West Bengal Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Minister Firhad Hakim launched the Municipal Energy Efficiency Programme (MEEP), with the aim to enable energy-efficient water supply across the state.

MEEP is a collaboration between the West Bengal Government and the PSU, Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL). A total of 39 urban local bodies (ULB) are currently in the programme, and 1,161 water pumps are being replaced with energy-efficient variants. The other ULBs will take part in the programme soon.

This move towards energy efficiency in municipal water supply systems is expected to impact water conservation efforts in a big way. On the occasion of the launch of MEEP, the minister said it was the government's priority to create stable, sustainable and transparent public utility systems. According to the government sources, MEEP has been launched to ensure annual energy savings of 33.22 million units and reduction in greenhouse gas emissions to the tune of 27,245 tonne of CO2, resulting in monetary savings of Rs 153.65 crore through the project period of 7 years.
