Patna, Sep 19 : Stepping up their drive against smuggling of liquor into ‘dry’ Bihar, police and excise authorities seized huge consignments of foreign liquor, worth nearly Rs 95 lakh, and nabbed two peddlers in Saran and Gopalganj districts during the last 12 hours.
According to a report from Hajipur, police seized 560 cartons of foreign liquor from a truck under Sonpur police station area in Saran district late last night.
Police said truck driver Jasbinder Singh was arrested from the spot. Other peddlers made good their escape from the spot. Sources said that the consignment was seized when it was being downloaded from the truck in Sabalpur Hasti Tola.
Police said the value of seized liquor was around Rs 55 lakh. The truck driver, a native of Patiala in Punjab was being interrogated. The seized liquor was manufactured in Haryana.
According to a report from Gopalganj, excise authorities seized 400 cartons of foreign liquor from a container during checking of vehicles at Balthari check post on National Highway 28 under Kuchaikot police station area in the district today.
Excise Superintendent Rakesh Kumar said the container driver, a native of Haryana, was arrested from the spot. With the objective of checking smuggling of liquor, vehicles coming from Uttar Pradesh were being checked at all check posts, he added.
Mr Kumar said the value of seized liquor was more than Rs 40 lakh. He said the truck driver during interrogation disclosed that he was smuggling liquor to Muzaffarpur from Haryana.(UNI)
