New Delhi, May 14: Describing the alleged incident of gang rape in Hapur, Uttar Pradesh as 'shameful', the Congress on Tuesday hit-out at the BJP alleging that atrocities against women have seen an upsurge in the BJP ruled state of Uttar Pradesh and asked the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take the responsibility for it.
Speaking to reporters here, Congress spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill said that there was a rise in rape incidents in the BJP ruled states, adding that in some of the BJP ruled states their own leaders were allegedly involved in such crimes and the concerned governments were trying to shield them.
He said that according to official statistics, there has been an increase of 83 per cent in rape incidents with girls during the last five years in the country, while the incidents of harassment with women have increased by 34 per cent.
Mr Shergill added that as per the government data, incidents of rape have increased by 25 percent in U.P.
The Yogi Adityanath government was proving to be ineffective in controlling crimes against women in the state, he added.
Terming the Hapur incident as gruesome, Congress spokesperson said that the victim who is only 20 years old and a widow, was gangraped 14 times and despite her complaint to the police she was sent back without being heard , which led her to take the extreme step of allegedly attempting to commit suicide and she had eighty per cent burns and is under treatment in a Delhi hospital. She had said that it was to save herself from being raped again that she took such extreme step. (UNI)
