Bandh against citizenship Bill disrupts normal life in Assam

Guwahati, Jan 9 : Normal life was thrown out of gear in Assam today as the 11 hour bandh called by influential All Assam Students Union (AASU) and supported by over 100 organisations and political parties came to an end.

The bandh was called against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, which was passed in Lok Sabha today. The bandh also coincides with a two day 'chakka bandh', starting today, against various provisions in the amended motor vehicle act.

Sporadic incidents of violence have been reported from different parts since morning. In Golaghat, bandh supporters ransacked the district BJP office and torched all furniture.

In Guwahati, miscreants broke windows of stationary vehicles near the Raj Bhawan and Noonmati. Buses were damaged in Demow, Chabua and Sivsagar, among other places. Tyres were burnt on the roads across the state,,with AASU leaders and members taking part. (UNI)
