New Delhi, Dec 20: Assam Chief Minister Sarbanand Sonowal on Thursday flayed former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh for not being able to "do anything" on the Bogibeel Bridge, country's longest road and railway bridge.
Addressing a press conference in BJP Headquarters here, he said the bridge was first proposed during the tenure of H D Deve Gowda as Prime Minister but nothing much happened during 10 years of UPA rule.
"Such was the condition despite the fact that Dr Manmohan Singh represented Assam in Rajya Sabha and he was the Prime Minister for a decade," Mr Sonowal said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the bridge on the Brahmaputra on December 25, the birthday of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Sonowal said.
The 4.98 km-long bridge will reduce the distance for the people of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam and will facilitate faster movement of troops and supplies to the India-China border in Arunachal Pradesh.
"In contrast, North East has today become a hub of various socio economic activities especially with ASEAN countries and this has become possible due to hard work and sincerity of purpose shown by Prime Minister Narendra Modi," the Chief Minister said.
"Congress ruled India for 60 years. But the region remained neglected. Even Assam Accord signed in 1985 was not implemented. They betrayed the people.....Confidence has come back in the minds of youth in the region," he said.
Chief Minister lauded Prime Minister Modi's sincerity and said Assam-Bangladesh border will be sealed soon.
He said NRC is a must for the state and this will help identify illegal immigrants.
Sonowal also expressed happiness that BJP has done extremely well in the recent panchayat polls in Assam. (UNI)
