Sharjah celebrates Diwali with ‘Indian Night’

Sharjah, 25 Oct 2019 : ‘Indian Night’ -- a nine-hour long Indian cultural extravaganza for the local and expat communities in the UAE held on Friday at The Flag Island here.
The full day festivities featured celebrity appearances. Bollywood choreographer and winner of popular Indian dance show ‘Jhalak Dikhla Ja’ – Salman Yousuff Khan; famous singer and winner of Tamil music reality show, Nikhil Mathew; and MJ Sriram, actor and multilingual singer from Tamil Nadu enthralled the audience.

"Diwali is one of the most significant occasions on India’s festive calendar, and we wanted The Flag Island to be the go-to family destination in Sharjah for celebrations. The UAE has a vibrant Indian expat community of over 2 million people, and through the years, their important festivals have become part of our local culture enjoyed not only by Indian residents and tourists, but people of all nationalities," Khuloud Salim Al Junaibi, General Manager of The Flag Island said on the occasion.

Visitors enjoyed the Bollywood dance performances to the season’s chart-topping numbers, local and international music bands with popular Indian and Indonesian songs, colourful fashion shows, dance shows featuring local dancers and classical style of kathak and the high-energy ‘garba’.

On the spot competitions held for the best-dressed male, female, couple and family. An array of stalls bustling with food vendors, authentic jewellery and clothing displayed the perfect festive mood of India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had three visits to the UAE in four years as an affirmation of the close relationship between the two countries. The cultural and Art relationship between both countries has been highlighted in all visits. Earlier, United Arab Emirates (UAE) has conferred its highest civilian honour -- Zayed Medal -- on Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his role in consolidating ties between the UAE and India.
