Vayalar Award goes to VJ James’ ‘Nireeshwaran’

Thiruvananthapuram: After a controversy in which one of the award committee members,M.K. Sanu Master, resigned, the Vayalar Award Jury finally picked V J James’ ‘Nireeshwaran’ for the award.

A three-member jury comprising K V Mohan Kumar, A K Nambiar and Anil Kumar Vallathol has decided the winner.The award carries a cash prize of 1 lakh, a citation, and a statuette designed by sculptor Kanayi Kunhiraman.

The award, in its 43rd year, will be presented to James at a function to be held at Nishagandhi auditorium here at 5.30 p.m. on October 27, the death anniversary of the late poet and lyricist Vayalar Rama Varma.

Announcing the award, writer and former Kerala Sahitya Academy President, Perumbadavom Sreedharan who is also the president of Vayalar Rama Varma Memorial Trust, said the jury had arrived at the decision unanimously. “I congratulate James for his efforts,” Sreedharan said at a press conference.
