Row over ‘scholarship name’ in Andhra

Agency News

A row has been kick up in Andhra over the name change of a scholarship scheme from “Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Pratibha Puraskar Awards” to “Y.S.R. Vidya Puraskars”.

Critics have alleged that it is a shame to the state as to change the name of a scholarship scheme which was instituted in the name of the eminent scientist APJ Abdul Kalam. Opposition parties such as Telugu Desam Party(TDP) alleged that the name of the scholarship has been changed under the instruction of CM Jagan Mohan Reddy. The Scholarship has been changed into the name of the Chief Minister’s father and former CM YS Rajasekhara Reddy.

Former Andhra Pradesh CM and TDP leader Chandrababu Naidu taking to Twitter to express his anguish over the issue noting: “Dr. Kalam has accomplished much for the nation with his inspiring life. @ysjagan’s govt changing “APJ Abdul Kalam Pratibha Puraskar” to “YSR Vidya Puraskar” is a shocking method of self-aggrandizement at the cost of disrespecting a much venerated man. #YSRCPInsultsAbdulKalam”.

A government order(GO) issued by the School Education Department has renamed an award scheme called “Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Pratibha Puraskar Awards” to “Y.S.R. Vidya Puraskars”.

The awards will be distributed on National Education Day on November 11.  The name of the award scheme was changed following a proposal by the Commissioner of School Education of Andhra Pradesh. Under the scheme, 6 students in every mandal are given an award and scholarship for obtaining the highest scores in class X.

As the opposition parties, mainly TDP and JSP have been upped the ante on the issue, a hashtag #YSRCPInsultsAbdulKalam is trending on social media.
