Eluru, Sep 5: The water level in river Godavari was rising at Polavaram in West Godavari district, following heavy rains in the catchment areas.

The water level at Polavaram CWC centre rose to 10.42 meters on Thursday evening from 9.21 meters that recorded on Wednesday evening. The Kothuru Causeway, which is the roadway connecting 19 interior villages in the Polavaram mandal was inundated under 7 feet water.

Due to the inundation of the causeway, the road connectivity to the 19 tribal villages was cut off. The flood water is flowing three feet on the road at Spill-way of Polavaram Irrigation Project.

The people are using country boats to cross the Kothuru Causeway which was in 7 feet deep in flood water to reach Polavaram. The people are using a ferry to take their vehicles to another side of the causeway to reach Polavaram and other areas.

The officials said that there might be heavy inflows to River Godavari following heavy rains in Maharashtra. As the river was in spate, the officials closed the Kademma sluice gates with a fear of entry of flood water into the sluice.

However, the Kovvada rivulet which flows to River Godavari through this sluice gates is now reversed and inundating Polavaram village roads. Meanwhile, the people fear about the safety of the Necklace Bund that constructed at Old Polavaram village. Already 90 per cent of the necklace bund was eroded in last month's floods and again the river was witnessing heavy inflows. (UNI)
