Heavy inflow of water into river Godavari continues

Eluru, Aug 2 : The heavy inflow of water into river Godavari continued on Friday, the spillway of Polavaram Irrigation project was inundated and the flood water breached the cross bund constructed between 15th block to 48 blocks.

The floodwater is flowing four feet above the spillway and entered into the spill channel.

Polavaram Project Executive Engineer Balakrishna told media that about one lakh cusecs of flood water have flown into the spill channel.

Following the sudden incident, the contracting agency Navayuga constructions officials immediately removed the obstructions below the spill channel for the free flow of flood water into the river.

The water level at Polavaram stood at 11.48 meters today. Central Water Commission (CWC) Assistant Engineer Saravanan said that at present 7 lakh cusecs water is reaching into River Godavari and another seven lakh cusecs is expected during next 24 hours.

Polavaram Project Executive Engineer Srinivasa Rao said that at present 26.15 meters of water level was recorded at cofferdam and there was no danger to it.
Meanwhile, the Andhra Pradesh Eastern Power Distribution Company (APEPDCL) Limited officials managed to restore power supply to 19 tribal villages which plunged into darkness since the last five days due to flood.

These villages have no access to the outer world as the floodwater flowing 10 feet above the causeway at Kothuru village in Polavaram agency mandal.

The Revenue officials managed to reach the marooned villages and distributing rice, kerosene and other essential commodities to the flood victims.

District Collector R Mutyala Raju along with Deputy Chief Ministers Pilli Subhash Chandra Bose, Alla Kali Krishna Srinivas (Nani) and Minister Taneti Vanitha ventured into the river in a high power launch and reached these marooned villages late on Thursday night.(UNI)
