Vijayawada, May 30: A decade of struggle has paid off.The determination and self-confidence of Yeduguri Sandinti Jagan Mohan Reddy has made him Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh after enduring nearly 10 years of struggle following the death of his father Y S Rajasekhar Reddy in a helicopter crash.

Born on December 21 in 1972, Jagan Mohan Reddy had his early education at a Hyderabad public school and did B.Com at Pragathi Mahavidyalay. Wife Y S Bharati is a homemaker and his two daughters are pursuing higher education in London. Reddy entered politics in 2004 by participating in the election campaign for the Indian National Congress in the united AP state. He was elected to Lok Sabha from Kadapa in the 2009 elections. However, the death of his chief minister father Y S Rajasekhar Reddy in helicopter crash on September 2, 2009, turned his political future upside down. Hundreds of people died of shock and some ended life in the coastal AP districts. On April 9, 2010, Jagan Reddy started 'Oodarpu Yatra' to console the bereaved family members which aroused disquiet in the Congress high command.

It asked him to stop. Reddy met the then AICC president Sonia Gandhi along with his mother Y S Vijaya Lakshmi but was denied permission to continue the yatra. On November 29, 2010, Reddy resigned from the Congress party and his MP post as well. He continued his yatra which made him as a popular leader in the state. He was re-elected to LS from Kadapa in the May, 2011, bypoll with a huge margin of 5.4 lakh votes.

On March 11, 2011, he announced the floating of Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party in East Godavari district and the next day he hoisted the party flag at Idupulapaya in Kadapa district at the memorial of his late father YSR.However, he witnessed turbulence in his political career as he was arrested on May 25, 2012, by the Central Bureau of Investigation in corruption cases. He was lodged in the Chenchelguda jail in Hyderabad for about 16 months.

In 2014 elections, his party got only 66 seats in the 175-member Assembly. However, Reddy proved his capabilities and efficacy as Leader of the Opposition by raising the Chandrababu Naidu led government’s failures and corrupt deeds in the Assembly.

He also effectively rebutted the Telegu Desam Party allegation of corruption against him. However, Jagan Reddy suffered a setback as 23 MLAs and three MPs of his party defected to the ruling TDP. Interestingly, Naidu-led TDP has won exactly 23 MLAs and three MP seats in the just concluded elections.

Another significant milestone in Jagan Reddy’s political career was his 3,648 km walkathon covering all 13 districts in 341 days. He embarked his padayatra on November 6, 2017 at his late father YSR’s memorial at Idupulapaya in Kadapa district and on January 10, 2019, concluded it at Itchapuram. His 3,648 km padayatra drew huge crowds and ensured his election victory.

An attempt was made on the life of Jagan Reddy in the Visakhapatnam airport on October 25, 2018 as a waiter of the cafeteria stabbed him with sharp edged knife.Jagan Reddy is also an industrialist as he owns several industries including Bharathi Cements and power projects. He owned the Sakshi Telugu newspaper and news channel which played significant role by disseminating and highlighting Jagan Reddy’s flagship schemes in the election manifesto.

In 2018, Jagan Reddy engaged noted political strategist Prashant Kishor as YSRCP political strategist who scripted the party's campaign. The YSRCP has won 151 MLA seats and 22 MP seats in the 2019 elections. UNI
