Amaravati Nov 28 : The red sander logs, which were seized from the red sander smugglers, was auctioned, that fetched Rs 1,612 crore to the government of Andhra Pradesh. Chief Secretary Anil Chandra P said that 4000 tonnes of seized red sander would be auctioned soon.
Addressing a review meeting in the Secretariat here on Wednesday, he said that since 2002, 14,318 tonnes of red sander has been seized from smugglers and 9442 vehicles have also been seized.
He said that 28,760 have been arrested for indulging red sander trees felling and smuggling and 15,426 cases have been registered against them since 2002. He said that CCTVs were installed at 180 vulnerable places for red sander smuggling and forest marches and combings operations were being conducted.
The Chief Secretary asked the forest officials to take up recruitment of staff on permanent basis to check red sander smuggling. He also directed police officials to confiscate the properties of red sander smugglers.
Excise and police officials apprised the CS that satellite images are being used to identify Ganja cultivation in agency areas. He officials informed the CS that so far ganja crop in 3200 acres has been destroyed.
They told him that officials are using drones to identify the movements ganja smugglers and crop. The CS asked the officials to take steps that the ganja seeds were not brought into the state.
He asked officials to take steps to check the cultivation of ganja crop in Visakhapatnam, Viziangaram and East Godavari districts. (UNI)
