Port Blair, Aug 30: In a swift response, Indian Coast Guard Station Kamorta coordinated safe evacuation of 50 passengers from ferry boat MV Galathea, which ran aground after cast off from Kamorta jetty of Nicobar District due to engine failure at 1515 hrs today.
“On receipt of information, ICG launched a quick operation and saved precious 50 lives including 30 ladies and 16 children in the inclement weather. The operation was undertaken despite strong winds blowing across and high waves,” Deputy Commandant Pratik Payal, Public Relations Officer of Coast Guard Region (A&N) informed media today.
ICGS Kamorta coordinated the evacuation by utilising various surface assets including Gemini of Coast Guard Ship C 422, two local fishing boats and PMF boat.
All passengers on successful evacuation were provided primary medical attention by the Indian Coast Guard.
Kamorta is an Island of Nicobar district of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which is inhabited by mostly Nicobari tribespeople. (UNI)
