Calm Your Mind

Amma, Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi

Children, today, people are in constant tension. Even with all life’s comforts, people have no escape from tension. It has become our nature to constantly worry.

Merely looking at a cut on our hand, worrying and crying about it, will not heal it. We should wash and clean the wound and apply medicine. Otherwise, it may get infected. It is the same with problems. Just worrying about them will not resolve them.

In fact, worrying over our problems just magnifies them. It then becomes like running a race with a 100-kilo weight around our neck. How can we win? Our life will be miserable.

Normally, a healthy person’s blood pressure will have a low of 80 and high of 120. When a person with high blood pressure gets stressed, it will increase to 150 or 200. Such a person can have a stroke and become paralysed on one side of the body. Tension weakens us, inside and out. A good percentage of people in society have heart disease. Many wear a pacemaker. If we can install the peacemaker of spirituality, however, then such pacemakers will not be needed.

Once, a guru and his disciples were walking in the sun. When they saw a tree, they sat in its shade. The guru asked the disciples to bring some water. In the distance, they saw a small pond. But when they began to collect water in a pot, a farmer brought his bulls to bathe in the pond. The water became completely polluted. The disciples were disheartened and returned to the guru and informed him. The guru asked them to sit next to him. Everyone rested for a half hour in the shade. After that, the master said, “Now, go back to the pond and check.” The disciples went back to the pond and saw that the water was now crystal clear. They filled their pots and offered it to the guru. The guru said, “This is the condition of the human mind. When problems arise, it gets murky and agitated. But by being quiet and silent for some time, it will retains its calm and becomes peaceful. It will then regain all its talents and capabilities.”
