Dr George Mathew has been awarded Abu Dhabi Award, UAE’s highest civilian award, for his 51-year-long selfless service in the field of medicine. Abu Dhabi Award and Medal, the highest civilian award, has been presented on Tuesday by the Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammad bin Zayed bin Sultan Al-Nahyan in a ceremony at Al Bahr Palace. He is the first Indian chosen for the Abu Dhabi award for medicine.

“We meet here today to not only celebrate the achievements of these selfless individuals but also to inspire the nation to continue on this humanitarian path. It is with immense pleasure that I, once again, congratulate these truly extraordinary individuals who have lifted our spirits and strengthened the spirit of our national union as set out by the Founding Father of the UAE, the late Shaikh Zayed,” said Shaikh Mohammad. “With their ambitious vision, optimism, love for people and abiding patriotism, these individuals have not only garnered the respect of the nation but also of those they have touched through their kindness and compassion. I am sure these individuals will continue to build on Shaikh Zayed’s vision and legacy as we strive to create a world of coexistence and peace,” he added.

Dr George Mathew, who arrived in Abu Dhabi 51 years back for giving service as a doctor, always experienced the heartfelt love of Abu Dhabi Royal family. During his four-decade-long stint, Dr George Mathew had also enjoyed a special bondage with Ruler of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi His Highness Sheikh Sayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

Doctor distinctly remembers His Highness Sheikh Sayed's simplicity while interacting with people. When he reached Abu Dhabi in 1967, the development was taking its baby steps in the city. There was not plenty of roads, sufficient electricity, enough drinking water and all. When the Royal family entrusted him with the health department of Al-Ain, he also kick-started a successful career. Considering his spectacular service, earlier Sheikh Sayed himself granted a UAE citizenship to the doctor. Then, to secure a citizenship was a big award for an Indian. He is the doctor who had the privilege to offer medical treatment to the late leader.

Dr George Mathew, born in Malaysia, completed his MBBS degree from Kerala at Medical College, Trivandrum. Then he travelled to England for his Masters in Medicine. His wife, Valsa, who hails from Kavumbhagam, Thiruvalla. His daughter Mariyam Mathew is currently working as a media specialist in Al Ain in the government department.
