Amitabhji is fine, says his MP wife Jaya Bachchan in Parliament

Actor Jaya Bachchan, wife of thespian Amitabh Bachchan, sought to allay fears about her husband's health on Tuesday, stating ``Amitabh Bachchanji is fine’’. 

``Would I be here if he was unwell?’’ she asked reporters who besieged her with queries about the thespian when she came to Parliament. The veteran actor had complained of general uneasiness during the shooting of his film 'Thugs of Hindostan' at Jodhpur in Rajasthan.

Ms. Bachchan, however, declined to comment on her former Samajwadi Party colleague Naresh Agrawal’s remarks regarding her at the time of his joining the BJP. Agrawal quit SP and joined the BJP on being denied re-nomination to Rajya Sabha. Her party chief, Akhilesh Yadav, however, asked the BJP to take strict action against  Agrawal for his comments. Senior leader Mulayam Singh Yadav said his party will gain from the exit of Agrawal.Upset that SP preferred to re-nominate Jaya Bachchan rather than him to the Upper House,  Agrawal vocied his resentment at his former party equating him with ``someone who dances and performs roles in films’’. Senior party leader Sushma Swaraj, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Smriti Irani and MP Roopa Ganguly strongly condemned the remarks while the BJP distanced itself from them. Agrawal has since, expressed ``regret if he has hurt anyone’s feelings’’. 

Daughter of journalist and writer Taroon Coomar Bhaduri, Jabalpur-born Jaya started her film career with legendary Satyajit Ray in ``Mahanagar’’. She was awarded the Padma Shree in 1992. She has been chairperson of the Children’s Film Society. A gold-medalist from the Pune Film and Television Institute of India, her repertoire includes films like Guddi, Uphaar, Abhimaan, Koshish, Zanjeer, Sholay, Mili, Chupke Chupke, Kabh Khushi Kabhi Gham, Kal Ho Na Ho and Hazar Chaurasi Ki Maa. During her career, she won eight Filmfare awards which makes her the overall most-awarded woman performer, along with Nutan.She married actor Amitabh Bachchan in 1973 when she was at the peak of her film career.
