Modi inaugurates Kochi Metro

Kerala's giant development leap was witnessed on Saturday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the state's prestigious Kochi Metro. Delivering the inaugural address the Prime Minister said that his government was initiating "a people oriented paradigm shift in urban development".

Prime Minister Modi, clad in a sky blue kurtha matching the colour scheme of Kochi Metro travelled by Kochi Metro from Palarivattam to Padivattam before the formal inauguration of the metro at the Nehru International Stadium at Kaloor in the heart of Kochi city. He was accompanied in the metro ride by Kerala Governor P.Sadasivam, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Union Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu, Metro Man E.Sreedharan and BJP state president Kummanam Rajasekharan

.As a matter fact but extempore speech in English, preceded by a few words in Malayalam greeting the people of Kerala, the Prime Minister congratulated those behind the Kochi Metro project including Uniion Minister Venkaiah Naidu and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan for having completed and commissioned the project in record time.This is the fastest and the most modern metro in the country, he pointed out. He congratulated Kochi Metro Rail Ltd for introducing innovative schemes like multi- purpose rupay card 'Kochi 1' and also Mobile App which the Prime Minister said would go a long way in transforming the city of Kochi and its people smart. He pointed out that Kochi Metro contributed to the Make in India programme by the manufacture of coaches by the French collaborator in Chennai.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan who spoke on the occasion called for better cooperation between the state and the central governments for faster and smoother development. He said Kochi Metro was a case of effective center-state cooperation. "Those who tried to create controversies are now disappointed", he added. He urged the Center to be liberal to the state government considering its resource constraints. Union Urban Development Minister, Venkaiah Naidu, also addressed the gathering. Sharing dais with the Prime Minister at the function were Opposition Leader of Kerala Assembly, Ramesh Chennithala, State Minister for Transport, Thomas Chandy, K.V.Thomas MP, Mayor, Soumini Jain and Metro Man, E.Sreedharan
