Explosion in an ONGC ship at Cochin Shipyard; five dead, eleven injured and one critical

At least five people were killed and 11 others injured in an explosion in an ONGC ship at the Cochin Shipyard on Tuesday. All victims are Malayalis.  Ramshad from Vypeen and Kevin from Pathanamthitta, Unni from Eloor, Gavin  from Kottayam and Kannan lost their lives.  One among the injured, Srirup,  is critical.

Kochi City Commissioner MP Dinesh has said that the fire is now totally extinguished and it is confirmed that no one is stranded inside the ship. The explosion took place on Tuesday  in the water tank  of Sagar Bhushan, an  exploration vessel of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), which was brought to the Cochin Shipyard for repair. The police and the fire and rescue services were at the accident spot.

The Cochin Shipyard is closed today on the occasion of Mahashivratri and only a few sections were open for carrying out maintenance work when the explosion occurred.
