Row over the removal of FB posts which criticise ‘Aami’

 Feb 12, 2018

Controversies never end in case of director Kamal’s ‘Aami’, a biopic on the late writer Madhavikkutty aka Kamaladas. The latest allegation is against the Director Kamal for removing a Facebook post for criticizing the film “Aami”.

A negative review against ‘Aami’ written and posted on Facebook by a Malayalam filmmaker Vinod Mankara was removed by Facebook itself. Vinod Mankara also raised an accusing finger against director Kamal that it was based on Kamal’s instructions, Facebook removed his post. The reason put forward by Facebook is that the review infringes their copyright."

Filmmaker Vinod Mankara had criticised heavily the film ‘Aami’. He blamed the film for its aesthetics. Vinod also said the treatment of the subject was also misplaced. As soon as this negative review appeared on Facebook, the film's production house, Reel and Real Cinemas, raised objections with Facebook. Reel and Real Cinemas alleged that the Facebook post infringed on the movie’s intellectual copyright. Eventually, Facebook removed the post.

After this, Vinod put up another post blaming Reel and Real Cinemas and others for the removal of his Facebook post. He also raised an accusing finger against director Kamal that it was based on Kamal’s instructions, Facebook removed his post.

"They have claimed what I wrote is their intellectual property. This is a scary situation. This means anyone can do anything, by entering one's Facebook profile at any time. When I reached out to this company, they threatened me saying that they will go to any extent. We need to protest against these people, who are scared of the power of words and social media. A situation where we are denied the right to disagree is an attack on our freedom of expression," Vinod wrote.

However, Vinod later said that this post too was removed. But Kamal denied reports of his role in the negative reviews being taken down from Facebook.

While speaking to a television channel at the Kerala Literature Festival in Kozhikode, Kamal said: "If it is the producer's wish to raise an objection, then how can I interfere? I do not have a say on it at all. Neither will I tell the producer how to deal with negative comments. As far as the producer is concerned, a film is also a product for him. It is art for me, but for the producer, it is his product”.

From the beginning Aami has moved from one controversy to the other. Vidya Balan opting out of the film was the first. Later one has lost count. After its release controversy is chasing Aami, perhaps like Kamala Das.
