 Feb 12, 2018

Brushing aside fierce opposition, the Edappadi K Palanisamy government has unveiled a large size portrait of late Chief Minister and general secretary of the ruling AIADMK, Jayalalitha, in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Monday.

A seven feet height and five feet width portrait of late chief minister J Jayalalithaa was inaugurated at the Tamil Nadu Assembly hall today by speaker P Dhanapal on Monday morning at a special meeting of the Assembly. The meeting has started with the customary 'Tamil Thaai Vazhthu' this morning, Dhanapal unveiled the portrait and offered respects. An audio of Jayalalithaa's speech in the Assembly was aired.

The chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, Deputy CM O Panneerselvam, AIADMK MPs, MLAs and other dignitaries were present at the function. Palaniswami said that the Amma's fame will remain as long as this world is there. Amma roared like a lion in this Assembly. She brought many schemes for the welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu. She strived hard to get the due share of Tamil Nadu in Cauvery river.

But opposition parties DMK, Congress, and DMDK boycotted the event. DMK Working President M K Stalin had earlier condemned the move by saying that as per the Supreme Court verdict Jayalalithaa was a convict in the disproportionate assets case.

CPI(M) also joined with the DMK stand. CPI(M) State Secretary G Ramakrishnan had said, "It will be a wrong precedent to unveil the portrait of a person who was convicted in the disproportionate assets case."
