Floods in the east

Just when monsoon has broken out on the west coast and experts are predicting good rains this year, gladdening the hearts of farmers as well as planners, Mizoram is grappling with the fury of flash floods. Incessant rains in the region have washed away 350 houses and landslides have cut off the region. The rains, caused by the depression in the Bay of Bengal, have also caused havoc in parts of Assam and Tripura and neighbouring Bangladesh.

Guwahati, the Assam capital, has already issued a general alert with the city receiving a record 70 mm rain on one day and several instances of landslides on the way to Kamrup. In Aizawal, in Tripura, also rains have caused havoc with many families having to be evacuated to safer places.

The Met Department does not bring any glad tidings; it has warned of heavy rains across the seven northeastern states in the course of the week.
