World Population on the rise

World Population on the rise

 Jun 23, 2017

A UN report on Thursday said that in 2050 the world population would reach 9.8 billion despite a ‘nearly universal’ drop in fertility rates. The current population of 7.6 billion will balloon to 9.8 in another 33 years.

Today India ranks as the second most populous country with 1.3bn inhabitants. It will surpass China’s 1.4bn by 2024. The increase in population is the most rapid in Nigeria according to the report and so Nigeria will overtake the US to become the third most populous country.  The populations in the 26 African countries are likely to double by 2050.More than half the growth in numbers is expected to come from Africa even though fertility rates have fallen in the continent in recent years. Asia is predicted to be the second largest contributor. Europe is most affected by declining fertility rates. It is the only region expected to have a lesser population in 2050.

A study reveals that an astounding 83 million people are being added to the world’s population every year. By 2030 the global population will reach 8.6bn and by 2050 it will be 9.8bn. At the turn of the century, in 2100 the population is estimated to be 11.2bn.

With life expectancy increasing and the death rate decreasing, the number of persons above 60 years is expected to double by 2050 and to triple by 2100. The numbers of the ageing population is likely to rise from 962mn globally in 2007 to 2.1bn in 2050 and 3.1bn in 2100.
