Kumble Quits

Anil Kumble quit as coach of the Indian cricket team after his 1 year contract expired. His stepping down comes amid speculation of a rift with Captain Virat Kohli.

His one year contract expired at the end of Champions Trophy. He was given the option to accompany the team to the West Indies for the limited over series starting on Friday. Kumble however decided to stay back in London for the ICC Annual conference as he is the chairman of the Cricket Committee. The Indian team boarded the flight to Barbados.

On the side lines of the Champions Trophy in the UK, the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) – Sachin Tendulkar, V.V.S. Lakshman and Saurav  Ganguly held meetings with Kumble and Kohli to sort out the differences. Kohli , it is believed , made it clear to the CAC that his relationship with the coach has reached a dead end. Kumble`s coaching style has reportedly been described as “intimidating”, and players often felt that the coach behaved like a school headmaster.

It was the CAC which picked Kumble as a coach last year. The team has done extremely well under Kumble in the last 12 months. They had won the series in West Indies before winning against New Zealand, Bangladesh and Australia on home ground. The team won 8 ODIs and lost 5 during Kumble`s tenure.

BCCI acting president ,  C.K.Khanna and acting secretary, Amitabh Choundhury thanked  Anil Kumble for his services to the Indian Team. Choudhary said “We wish to place on record our sincere appreciation for the immense contribution by Anil Kumble to the team which enabled India to attain the No.1 Test position. Indian Cricket needs his continued contribution in various capacities and we wish him all the best in his future endeavours.”

Among the contenders for the post of coach is Tom Moody of Australia . He has coached the Srilankan team leading them to the 2007 World Cup Final. He currently coaches Sunrisers Hyderabad , with whom he won the IPL last year. He has coached the Australian domestic side for Western Warriors. Presently he is the Director for Big Bash League team Melbourne Renegades.

Also in the fray is Richard Pybus of England. He has coached both Pakistan and Bangladesh teams. He is currently the Director of cricket for the West Indies Cricket Board. In South African domestic cricket he is famous for guiding Titans and Cape Cobras to nine championship titles in six seasons.

Virender Sehwag mentor of Kings XI Punjab for 2 IPL seasons was elevated to head of cricket operations and strategy for the 2017 edition. His name is doing the rounds owing to his rapport with Virat Kohli.

Lalchand  Rajput was manager of 2007 World T20 winning Indian team and has had successful coaching stints with India`s U-19 and A Teams.  He is currently coach of the Afghanistan national team. The affable manager is also being touted for the post.

The BCCI has invited new names for the team coach’s post. Time of 7-10 days extension has been given for applications. ”The captain has reservation with my style, “said Kumble and added ,”it`s best for me to move on.”
