TRAI hauled over coal over its new consultation paper by Airtel and Vodafone

 Jun 21, 2017

The war over the airwaves intensifies as old players Airtel and Vodafone taking on the telecom regulator TRAI for allegedly giving undue favours to the new entrant Reliance Jio controlled by Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance. They have alleged that the Mukesh Ambani led Jio has been offering new connections under the guise of test connections bypassing regulations. The existing players under the umbrella organisation COAI have asked the department of telecommunications (DOT) to disconnect all the 1.5 million connections provided by the new entrant. Meanwhile the regulator has come with a consultation paper to refine the rules of network testing.

“What is the need for a new consultation paper on network testing as there is no ambiguity or grey areas in the existing guidelines, Airtel asks in its submission to TRAI .They have alleged that the enrolment of the new subscribers is not permitted before the full commercial operation. Airtel points out that in the test phase itself Jio was providing 4 G data services and voice calls free.

Jio rubbishes the allegations and calls it “malicious, unfounded ill-founded, ill-informed , and frivolous and are contrary to actual facts”.

Airtel in its submission to TRAIi said that it has failed to act suo motto basis on the clear violation of the rule”.”Airtel says that “Instead of taking action against the new entrant, TRAI is coming up with a consultation paper on the issue”.

More noises are going to be heard over the airwaves in future as the war hots up.
