All-time high output of foodgrains expected this year

 May 16, 2018

The Centre on Wednesday said foodgrains production is expected to be an all-time high of 279.51 million tonnes in 2017-18 with record wheat and rice output likely at 98.61 and 111.52 million tonnes respectively on account of normal monsoon last year and policy initiatives taken by the government.

Foodgrains production last year was 275.11 million tonnes while wheat output was 98.51 million tonnes and rice was 106.29 million tonnes last year.

But for the output of jute and mesta and edible oilseeds, which may be marginally lower than last year, all other commodities including pulses, coarse cereals, cotton, and sugarcane show a higher production this year as per the 3rd Advance Estimates of major crops released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare here.

Pulses production is expected to show a quantum jump to 24.51 million tonnes from 23.13 million tonnes last year. Already the government has allowed export of pulses from this year.

The production of coarse cereals this year is likely to be 44.87 million tonnes against 43.77 million tonnes last year, while sugarcane at 355.10 million tonnes is higher by 49.03 million tonnes over last year’s output at 342.04 million tonnes.

Production of cotton is estimated at 34.86 million bales (of 170 kg each) against 32.58 million bales last year.

According to the estimates, the production of oilseeds, however, is likely to be lower at 30.64 million tonnes this year compared to 31.28 million tonnes last year on account of lower sowing in some states.

The output of jute and mesta this year is expected to be 10.62 million bales (of 180 kg each) and is lower than last year. (UNI)
