Political uncertainty looms large as Karnataka electorate throw a fractured mandate

 May 15, 2018

Political uncertainty looms large over Karnataka as politically mature electorate yet again gave a fractured mandate on Tuesday with the BJP ending seven short of a magic figure of 111 to form a government and the Congress cobbling up a hasty alliance with the Janata Dal (Secular) in supporting it to head the next government.

The ball has been thrown in the courts of the Raj Bhavan with both the BJP as the single largest party and the JD(S)-Congress combine staking to form the government on numerical strength. Governor Vajubhai Vala has assured the stake claimers that he would decide after the Election Commission completes the process of counting.

With the results of all but one of the 222 seats declared, the BJP has won 103, the Congress 78, JD(S) 37, BSP 1, Others one and Independent one. In Hubli-Dharward Central Former Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar was leading by over 21,000 votes, but in view of certain mismatch in the numbers between EVM and VVPAT machine, the result had not been announced following the complaint by the Congress candidate Dr. Mahesh Nalwad.

Prominent among the losers was Chief Minister Siddaramaiah who lost in his home turf of Chamundeswari by a huge margin of over 36000 votes against his once party collegue GT Devegowda of the JD(S). But he won with a thin margin of 1696 in Badami against B Sreeramulu of the BJP. UNI
