16 killed in bridge collapse in Varanasi

At least 16 people were killed and 50 others injured when an under construction bridge near Cantonment railway station collapsed on Tuesday evening.

Though railway officials are yet to announce the number of casualties but district authorities said that 16 people were killed. The incident occurred when two pillars of the bridge collapsed when huge traffic was passing through the road. Several car and other vehicles were smashed by the girder of the bridge.

National Disaster Response Force or NDRF have been deployed to lead the rescue operations. Eight cranes were used to life the heavy debris. Gas cutters were also used to take out those who trapped under the pillars.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who represents Varanasi in Lok Sabha, has expressed grief over the incident and discussed the incident with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has asked Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya and Minister Neelkanth Tiwari to rush to the spot from Lucknow.

Chief Minister has also ordered a high level probe into the incident and asked to give its report within 48 hours. Meanwhile, UP government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs.5 lakh to the families of the deceased and Rs. Two lakh for those critically injured.
