Poker is a game of skill and not chance: Viswanathan Anand

 May 15, 2018

Poker is a game of skill and not chances, according to Indian chess ace Viswanathan Anand, who was roped in by Poker Sports League, a premium one in the country, as its brand ambassador.

"Poker is a game of skill because over a large number of hands one can just wish for the right card to come. One has to calculate the probabilities, guess their opponents in tensions and go for them. The sport has been internationally acknowledged and recognised, besides Poker Sports league is an attempt to furnish a platform for the immense talent we have in the country", Vishy told UNI.

Drawing a parallel between chess and poker, he underlined the fact that decision making process plays a prominent role in both the games. "It is very important to be controlled over impulses and come to the best position you can. In addition to that the learning methods are extremely similar. In poker you can study your
opponents and discover the style and past experiences and learn from that.'

Vishy, who feels that world-class games are becoming popular in India, added,"Training methods always gets more sophisticated and I think the reach of many games that include chess, is expanding over internet and can be played anywhere in the world. That is happening in poker as well. Online poker profile is very big and it is always in the interests of mathematics, skills and logic that makes it strategy oriented."

The Season 2 of Poker Sports League, the world's largest and only team based poker league with 11 franchise teams, competed for a prize pool of 4.5 crores that ended in Goa recently. Goan Nuts took away thecrown of the winning team and prize money of Rs two crores.

"Learning from other people is the main strategy of the game. Even in chess, you have to share and exchange ideas with your friends, colleagues and veterans to get a better hand. The whole idea of my association with the league lies in the fact that I find poker no different from chess & through this alliance we are hopeful that we are able to give the sport the long due prominence & acceptance," added Vishy.

The Chess Grandmaster and Brand Ambassador of Poker Sports League witnessed the finale. He said, "I would like to congratulate the winning team and all the other teams for being such a sport. Today we witnessed an amazing contest where we saw the tables turning with Goan Nuts taking away the glory at the last minute, leading the rest of the teams."

Team owners of Goan Nuts told UNI, "We are extremely delighted to take away the trophy and the prize money home. Our team has worked very hard to earn this title and hopefully will accomplish it every year from now on. Very grateful to our team captain Dhaval Mudgal who made this dream a reality."

Co-founder PSL Amit Burman said, "This season has raised the bar extensively & the game today was a proof that poker is here to stay. We are mere facilitators to give this sport the status that it deserves and establish it as a game of skill, by providing this platform to poker veterans across the globe. I congratulate each of the participating teams who fought hard to get the title & put up a brilliant show here in Goa to culminate Season 2." (UNI)
