Recently released ‘Raazi’ is a Hindi crime film that does not live up to expectations despite Alia Bhatt’s best efforts and Meghna Gulzar’s direction. In its attempt to be a strong crime thriller, it loses out somewhere down the line.

The film is based on Harinder Sikka’s novel ‘Calling Sehmat’ which is a compelling story of an army father whose daughter becomes an Indian spy. The film is a brave attempt to recreate that 1971 Indo-Pak era when the incident occurred. Alia Bhatt plays Sehmat, the Indian spy who marries a Pakistani. With her fresh, innocent looks somehow it gets tough to take her too seriously in the film. She tends to overplay her role. She is cute but amateurish.

Though the plot is quite engaging, ‘Raazi’ frequently makes it hard for the audience to take it seriously. The film isn’t gripping the way a thriller should be, and that is the film’s main flaw. The movie attempts to be sensitive to the Kashmir issue in a carefully balanced act.

The screenplay is by Meghna Gulzar and Bhavani Iyer. Meghna has also directed the film. The music by  Shankar-Ehsaan –Loy is enjoyable.

Altogether, it is a muddled and improbable spy thriller. Average on the rating score.
