‘Mahanati’ movie wins applauses; big break for Dulquer and Keerthy

 May 15, 2018

The release of the film ‘Mahanati’ on May 11th had seen theatres packed with full houses and a delighted audience who were taken back in time to the Golden era of Kollywood and Tollywood.

The movie’s impeccable attention to detail and the efforts taken to reconstruct a bygone era is one of the most applauded factors. Mollywood’s heart throb Dulquer Salman and actress Keerthy Suresh, Malayalam actress known mostly for her work in tamil and telugu films, have done an outstanding job playing their respective roles as Gemini Ganesan and Savitri.

The duo is seen playing the roles of the famous couple of the era. Their relationship was abusive and unhealthy. Savitri and Ganesan had a turbulent marriage which Ganesan shared with another film actress at the same time. The alleged physical abuse has not been depicted in the film. The filmmakers did not want to strip away the dignity of this star by depicting her humiliating moments on screen. Although the film does makes it clear that he was responsible for her spiraling into self destruction and depression. Gemini Ganesan has still captured sympathy of the audience and in the end we believe that despite everything that happened between them he still cared for her.

Keerthy Suresh’s role as Savitri took everyone by surprise. When the news of her playing the role as Savitri surfaced, she had been the butt of trolls as no one thought Keerthy would be capable of filling the shoes of an actress who basically shaped Tollywood films.

Actress Savitri belonged to an era where women weren’t just a means of objectification. The actresses’ had to do more than just sit still and look pretty whereas Keerthy belongs to an era of actresses in Tamil and Telugu films who are shown on screen as an eye candy and maybe a little more.

Savitri, moreover, was not an ordinary actor - people still rave about her performance in films like Mayabazar, Pasamalar and more. With her expressive face, dancing skills and ability to steal the scene from under the nose of accomplished male actors.

Keerthy’s bubbly and cheerful demeanour had left many reeling in doubt as to whether or not she will be able to pull off the role. Biopic’s are never easy and the person portraying real life characters on screen are always subjected to criticism. Vidya Balan, Priyanka Chopra, Manju Warrier were actresses who faced flak after each of them had played real life characters on screen. Keerthy Suresh is a ‘new gen’ actress who is yet to make the impact these three women have made in the film industry. Ms Suresh confessed that she was hesitant to accept the role. After the release of this movie, she has set the record straight for anyone who doubted her.

The matured, emotionally broken, older and wiser Savitri played by Keerthy is heart breakingly exceptional. The dual life that most artists go through in the film industry is beautifully depicted in the movie. We see an assertive and impulsive Savitri as well as parts where she is seen participating in car races giving a big whoop to girl power. There are scenes where she’s trembling heartbroken, screaming and crying out of self pittance, for the love of a husband which she has to share with another woman and the painful smile she has to reveal as celebrations erupt around her.

What’s unique about this film is that a battered woman, who turns into an alcoholic because of her husband’s infidelities and goes to the extent of neglecting her children, is being portrayed as a role model for the women of our generation.

Towards the end of the film we see Savitri and not the ‘bubbly’ actress Keerthy.

This movie would not have been a success if not for Gemini Ganesan, played by Dulquer Salman. The actor has been known for his unconventional roles on screen and has earned himself accolades for his performance in various films where he is seen playing pivotal roles. Gemini Ganesan is just another acting achievement the actor can add to his career accomplishments.

In an interview the actor said, “I would be very uncomfortable doing safe roles”

“We all knew we were doing something important, something very special. To tell the story of legendary actress Savitri was something I believed in. This was a role away from my home territory in Kerala, hence an added challenge” the actor added.

Several top stars and directors including Akkineni Naga Chaitanya, Mohan Babu, Prakash Raj, Naresh, Krish, Srinivas Avasarala and Sandeep Vanga appeared in guest roles in this biographical film.
