Navjot Singh Sidhu acquitted by SC; fined Rs.1000

 May 15, 2018

Punjab Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu has been acquitted by the Supreme Court in a 30-year-old road rage case in Patiala on Tuesday. The Bench of Justices J Chelameshwar and Sanjay Kishan Kaul found him guilty of causing injury and imposed a fine of Rs.1000 only.

The court was reluctant to give him any jail term and allowed the cricketer-turned-politician to continue to hold the portfolio as a minister in the Punjab government. The Supreme Court suspended the earlier order of Punjab and Haryana HC which found Sidhu guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The SC verdict was based on Sidhu's appeal in the top court challenging the Punjab and Haryana HC order. The incident took place on December 27, 1988, in Patiala, in which Navjot Singh Sidhu had hit a 65-year-old man on the head during a tussle on a road. The man, one Gurnam Singh, died soon due to a haemorrhage at the hospital later.

Earlier, a trial court had discharged Sidhu in the case. But the High Court reversed this verdict and held him guilty of culpable homicide and ordered three years of jail term. But later, Supreme Court suspended this High Court verdict and granted Sidhu bail. The current Supreme Court verdict is based on Sidhu's appeal in the top court challenging the Punjab and Haryana HC order.
