Sunanda case: Delhi police charge Tharoor of abetment

 May 15, 2018

The Delhi police have accused Congress leader Shashi Tharoor with abetting the suicide of his wife Sunanda Pushkar. Tharoor has also been accused of behaving cruelly to his wife and that eventually forced Sunanda to commit suicide, says a 3000-page charge-sheet submitted in Delhi court on Monday.

Taking to Twitter, Shashi Tharoor called the charges 'preposterous'. Backing him, the Congress denounced what it called a 'politically motivated' charge sheet. The Delhi police have charged Shashi Tharoor under the IPC section 306 and 489 (A).

Sunanda Pushkar was found dead in a suite of a five-star hotel in Delhi on the night of January 17, 2014. The charge sheet which was about 3,000 page long accused only Shashi Tharoor in the case.

Just before her death, Sunanda had accused Shashi Tharoor of having an affair with a Pakistani journalist. The police at the beginning had claimed that Sunanda Pushkar was poisoned and registered a murder case in January 2015. Now, police have rejected the murder charge as they could not find any evidence. So they have reached the conclusion that she had been forced to commit suicide. Police sources say the couple had a life of frequent fights and Sunanda used to take antidepression pills even without any prescriptions.
