 Jun 19, 2017

A Jet Airways flight to Kochi from Dammam in Saudi Arabia turned into a hospital delivery room for a while when a 36-year old woman went into labor pains and gave birth to a boy as the plane was being diverted to Mumbai.

Among the passengers was a paramedic who, along with flight attendants, assisted the woman with the mid-air oprations.

Both mother and infant were rushed to a hospital after the plane made an unscheduled landing in Mumbai.
The airline said that its policy was to allow women to travel until the 37th week of pregnancy if they furnish a medical certificate to the effect that they could travel. The woman was in her 30th week of pregnancy.

The airline commended the crew for the successful life-saving operation and the promptness with which they rose to the occasion.

Though they were not sure of the nationality of the new arrival, whether it was over Indian airspace or in international waters neither did he have any travel documents, they have nevertheless decided that since this was the first arrival aboard their aircraft they would like to offer him with a free life-time pass for air travel.
