A second life

 Jun 19, 2017

A newborn child who was declared dead and sent home was found breathing and is recuperating in the nursery of a hospital. The father of the child, a duly wage laborer, said he could have buried the child if he hadn’t started kicking and wriggling inside a plastic bucket in which he was brought home. He has filed a case of negligence against the Safdarjung Hospital, a premier hospital in the Capital, of negligence and worse, and the police have started investigations. The police say they have started enquiries and would be exploring legal options and have consulted lawyers. After this an FIR would be filed.

Doctors at the hospital say it was technically a case of abortion as the delivery had taken place in the 20th week of pregnancy. The infant weighed 400 gms, and normally such infants should not be revived. She could not explain how they missed the fact that the child was breathing when they labeled it as dead, and sent it home.

The hospital authorities have instituted an enquiry and the heads of the gynecology and pediatric departments have been asked submit their enquiry reports.
