Ram Nath Kovind is BJP Candidate

 Jun 23, 2017

With the ruling NDA combine selecting the Bihar Governor, Mr. Ram Nath Kovind, as its candidate for the President’s election, it has again sprung a surprise. Soon after the candidature was announced, the Prime Minister rang up the Congress President, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, and sought her support. The BJP leaders have also been getting in touch other parties to seek their support for his eventual unanimous election.

Mr. Kovind, a Dalit leader from Uttar Pradesh and a lawyer who had enrolled in the Delhi High Court in 1971 and served as the Central Government’s advocate in the Delhi High Court, was also standing council of the Central Government in the Supreme Court. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh in 1994 and served for two terms of 12 years running.

Initial reports say there has been overwhelming support for his candidature from other parties, with the Telugu Desam being the first to offer support. The RPI’s Athavale has also come out in his support.

By selecting Mr. Kovind the BJP leadership of Mr. Amit Shah and Mr. Narendra Modi have again stolen march over the opposition, a move which is surprising as the choice of Yogi Adityanath, a clear dark horse, as the UP Chief Minister.
