SC nixes plea against salary, perks to Ex-MPs

 Apr 16, 2018

The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a petition challenging the validity of the salary, allowances, pension and perks given to former Members of Parliament (MPs). A division bench of the Apex Court, headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi, dismissed the plea filed by the NGO Lok Prahari.

A former MP is entitled to a minimum pension of 20,000/- per month and an additional pension of 1,500/- per month for every year served as member of either House for a period exceeding five years.

The petitioner had asked for scrapping of their pension as 82 per cent of MPs at present are crorepatis. Why taxpayers money be used for them, it questioned.

The Centre had clarified its stand to the Apex Court that it has no plans to constitute an independent Commission into the matter. It had justified pension and other perks given to former MPs and their family members.

The Centre had told the top court that it was needed for them to live with dignity after completing their tenure in Parliament. (UNI)
