Blistering knock by Sanju Samson helps RR score an impressive win over RCB

 Apr 16, 2018

Aided by a belligerent unbeaten 92 off just 45 balls by Kerala batsman Sanju Samson, Rajasthan Royals easily defeated Royal Challengers Bengaluru by 19 runs in the IPL tie played at M Chinnaswamy stadium here on Sunday.

The capacity crowd looked for the Virat Kohli team to deliver as the skipper won the toss on a hot afternoon, but opted the field first. The visitors ably saddled by Ajinkya Rahane, opening the batting and scoring a well paced 20 ball 36, set the tempo on a sultry evening and Samson sent the home bowlers on a leather hunt hitting 10 sixes and two fours in a 45 ball 92 that made the difference between the two sides.

Facing a daunting total RCB was never at it and again lost two big guns – Virat Kohli 57 (30b, 6x4, 2x6) and AB de Villers 20 removed by local leg spinner Shreyas Gopal (2/22). Rajasthan Royals skipper Rahane employed the local spinners including Krishnappa Gautam (1/36) very well. He asked the off spinner Gautam to pen the attack and cleverly used Gopal when the top batsmen were at the crease. This put paid to the RCB chase as Gautam sent back Brendom McCullum for just four runs on the fourth ball of the RCB innings while Gopal scalped Kohli and De Villers.

This put paid to the tall chase by RCB as top batsmen were back in the pavilion in the 13th over and Mandeep Singh managed an unbeaten 47 off 25 balls hitting six fours and a six but the plot was already lost for the RCB and the spectators in the packed house had started leaving before long.

Earlier, Rahane paced his innings well hitting 36 in 20 balls and adding 49 for the opening wicket in the company of D’ARcy Short (11) but was the first batsman to leave caught deep by Umesh Yadav off Chris Wokes who claimed 2/47.

This led to the advent of Samson who looked very cool but in a festive mood as people of West Coast in India celeberated Vishu festival today. He sent the RCB bowlers nonchalantly to all corners of the field with the ball clearing the ropes more often than not.

Samson added 49 runs for the third wicket in 33 balls with more accomplished Englishman Ben Stokes (27) being a minor partner. After Stokes was gone bowled by Yazuvendra Chahal, the best bowler for RCB claiming 2/22, he turned berserk in the last five overs. In the fag end of the Royals innings Wokes went for 15 runs in the 17th over, Kulwant for 16 in the 18th and Wokes for 17 in the 19th over.

But Samson preserved his best for Umesh Yadav smashing the Indian fast bowlers for 27 runs all for himself in the 20th over and the run scoring in the final over read 2,6,4,1nb,6,6,1. (UNI)
